Myocardial Preservation in Open-Heart Surgery

Abstract
Intracardic surgery needed the solution to two problems. The first and most obvious was the development of an effective cardiopulmonary support unit, while the second centered around the development of an effective means of slowing or stopping mechanical cardiac action.
The latter would allow the surgeon a relatively motionless field in which to operate and at the same time tend to prevent the embolism of air into the coronary or cerebral circulations from the empty cardic chambers.
But in such circumstances, the preservation of the myccardial function, during and in postoperative period, is the problems to be solved.
This article will be concerned with the various procedures available for optimal operative conditions and for the protection of the myocardium during the operative pericd and its recovery, after surgery.
